Rik Mayall has died. He was a good actor. A funny writer.
He’ll forever be remembered for ‘The Young Ones,’ (BBC) which I didn’t like but could see the skill in how it was written and put together.
I had a pleasant, funny hour with him in Birmingham once; exploring how we could make money from selling water.
It was in the foyer of a sound studio. We weren’t working together but both of us knew someone else who was there and a conversation began. We quickly knocked up a comedy situation out of what started as a normal conversation.
He must have been a dream to co-write with. He had a natural talent. He didn’t have to work hard at it. The development of a sketch appeared within half an hour. Then we parted and went our separate ways.
He was a charming, affable man, not one bit of a ‘I’m a star’ attitude.
